  4.     While he was Ronald Reagan's Secretary of Housing and Urban
  5. Development, Samuel Pierce was known as Silent Sam. Now, amid
  6. a burgeoning scandal at HUD, he is courting a new nickname:
  7. Invisible Sam. The House subcommittee on employment and housing
  8. would like to question him again, but, says a member, "finding
  9. him is tough."

  11.     Investigators contacting Pierce's old Manhattan law firm
  12. were told he resigned in 1981. They would check his business
  13. address, but he doesn't have one. The searchers believe he lives
  14. in New York. Exactly where? Nobody knows. When he is in
  15. Washington, he stays with a friend. Who? Nobody knows. Why not
  16. subpoena Pierce? Well, says a subcommittee staffer, "you have
  17. to have an address." The HUD probe may drag on for months. So
  18. could the search for Silent Sam.
